Sanskrit Wisdom

Verses, mantras, and mahavakyas with translations

Sanskrit — the language of the gods — carries vibration as well as meaning. Its mantras, shlokas, and mahavakyas have shaped the inner life of seekers for millennia.

The Four Mahavakyas

Each of the four Vedas yields one great utterance:

  • Prajñānaṃ Brahma — 'Consciousness is Brahman' (Aitareya Upanishad)
  • Ahaṃ Brahmāsmi — 'I am Brahman' (Brihadaranyaka Upanishad)
  • Tat Tvam Asi — 'That thou art' (Chandogya Upanishad)
  • Ayam Ātmā Brahma — 'This Self is Brahman' (Mandukya Upanishad)

Universal Mantras

Some mantras belong to all seekers — the Gayatri Mantra, the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, the Shanti Mantras, and the simple yet profound Om.

A Verse to Carry

सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः । सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु मा कश्चिद्दुःखभाग्भवेत् ॥ — May all be happy, may all be free from illness, may all see what is auspicious, may none suffer.
